Notes on Remote Access Service

Remote Access Service (RAS) supports dialup access to NT systems.

RAS clients can use the server in the same way as a LAN client.

NT Server 4.0 supports 256 inbound RAS connections. NT Workstation supports only one.

Permission to use RAS is configured in Account Manager

Callback makes the server hang-up and then call the client.

Encryption Options

  1. REQUIRE MICROSOFT ENCRYPTED AUTHENTICATION
    1. Uses Microsoft Challenge Authentication Protocol (MS-CHAP)
    2. Only supported on Microsoft systems
    3. Can also support REQUIRE DATA ENCRYPTION
  2. REQUIRE ENCRYPTED AUTHENTICATION
    1. Uses CHAP
  3. ALLOW ANY AUTHENTICATION INCLUDING CLEAR TEXT
    1. Uses Password Authentication Protocol (PAP)
    2. Does not use encryption
